A tech internship is a work opportunity that companies give to students or graduates so they can get hands-on experience. This applies to fields such as computer programming, data science, software engineering, and more. It’s a wonderful way for you to get real-life, specialized experience in a field that interests you. Today we share 3 tips for landing a paid internship in the tech industry.

What does a tech internship look like?

Most internships are temporary or seasonal, but they do pose the option of extended work or even a full-time job opportunity. Keep in mind that most companies will not offer internships to anyone under the age of 18. It’s a great choice if you’re currently a college student looking for more hands-on work beyond classroom lectures. If you’re a teen considering a paid tech internship then this is a great time to do your research, sharpen your skills, and start scouting potential companies.

How can I prepare myself for an internship?

1. Research tech companies

When researching tech companies to work for, consider your interests and values. Read the “About Us” section on their website, analyze the job description, and read what other people have to say about the company. It’s important you work somewhere that you resonate with and supports your values. Consider reading reviews by current and past employees to get an idea of the quality of the workplace, company culture, and management.

2. Network with people in the industry

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” as they say. Although it’s crucial to have the right skills, finding the right connections is just as important. Go to networking events, engage with people on LinkedIn or other social media, and talk to your current inner circle to see who they know. Try to find people who are working where you want to work and ask them if they hire interns. It’s a great way for you to get your foot in the door and discover new openings that may not even be listed yet.

3. Apply to internships early and often

Consider applying for internships at the beginning of the school year in August or September as many companies are looking to hire in the fall. This will give them time to interview, screen, and onboard candidates. Review the job description in advance and see what the requirements are. Brush up on your coding and developing skills before applying and spend time polishing your resume. You never know how many other people are applying for the same internship so finding a way to stand out and showcase your interest and enthusiasm is key.

My son (newly 15) did the 6-week program and I thought it was very good for him. First of all, it gave him something to do this summer (no typical job due to COVID), and second, I think it made him think about things other than math, which is his favorite subject and thing to do! I also appreciated the one on one mentoring sessions in addition to the weekly group session.

I also liked that he had homework to do between sessions. I thought that he received a lot of attention from the LogoLife founders and instructors and that the info given to him to develop was detailed and effective, and tailored to his passions.

A productive and comprehensive teen entrepreneurship program.

The Logolife program is a truly inspiring and innovative way to teach today's teens the skills they will need to adjust in this changing world. As a single parent, my biggest concern has been to prepare my kiddos for the future, but what the future holds is anybody's guess.

When I found Logolife, I was so excited because it teaches kids to adapt to changes and to create their own path forward. I am especially impressed that they encourage kids not to be afraid of failure, but to accept that trial and error is a meaningful part of the process and that being gritty and tenacious can be even more important than having natural talent or ability.

While they learn to capitalize on their strengths, they are also encouraged to grow through their weaknesses and to use what they have to bring value into the world around them. All of us know that what our schools aren't able to prepare our kids for the future or to make them successful in life.

Education alone isn't the answer; the answer is the right education. I am so proud to encourage every parent to investigate Logolife as an option for their children.

If you start by attending the parent meeting I think you'll find that every point of their program is something today's teens need to not only hear, but embrace. It also helps that everyone associated with the program is completely professional, helpful, gracious and enthusiastic.

My daughter and I have had nothing but a positive and uplifting experience with Logolife. I give them my very highest recommendation!
